A Short History of Amathus H3
The arrival in Limassol of two ex-Cheltenham and Cotswold hashers, out here working for a Generator company, led before very long to the formation of Amathus Hash. This momentous event took place in summer 1987, and Run 1 was held in the Amathus area, to the east of Limassol proper, in June 7th that year with an opening pack of about 7. T he two hashers in question were Jake Jarman, and Dave "Phallus" Thomas (also ex-Medan).
The hash muddled on, as newly formed hashes often do, with numbers in the twenties, for a couple of years, but gradually took hold and increased in numbers to the present average turnout of between 40 and 55.
Amathus H3 has always been a mixed, and supposedly a family hash, although it has to be said that no prisoners are taken in the circle, and no particular concessions made to the presence of Horrors. We take the view that they are under Parental Control. In point of fact, they are not likely to hear anything in the circle that they don't hear in the school playground. It is a little disconcerting though when an angelic looking three year old knows ALL the words to 4 & 20 Virgins!
Major events over the last 22 years included our 50th. Run, when 98 Cheltenham & Cotswold H3ers came out on tour, the 200th which attracted 200 altogether from all over the Middle East (held to coincide with one of the Muslim holidays), the 333, a practice for Interhash, which gave us all the toughest learning experience you could imagine, and the Big One - Interhash'96. 3000 hashers on the loose in Limassol. We have recently held our twenty-second birthday / 1200th run.
